— Chapter 49 —

Early Afternoon, Post-Revival Day 62

Inside Hardit Incubation Station Trenches, Serendine

Commander, 6907th TAC RGT, Task Force Keita, Human Legion

Lance had just split his regiment to deal with the sudden influx of Hardits coming from the rear. How his Marines had managed to miss this many enemies when they’d already cleared the trenches behind them was a mystery. Holding his sword in one hand and his SA-71 in the other, he pointed toward the charging Hardits with his blade.

“Here they come, Sash!” he shouted to his bodyguard, lover, and battlefield compatriot.

Before Sashala could turn to address the threat advancing from the rear, a wall of dust, pressure, debris, and sound enveloped her. Lance was startled by the sudden fireball. When he realized what was happening, he was lying on his back. The bloom of a fiery mushroom cloud crept into the sky; the flames twisted and churned into themselves as they hovered. It looked like the blast originated from about one hundred yards to his rear.

Rolling over in the mud to regain his feet, Lance righted himself and ran toward Sashala. She was already on a knee by the time he had closed on her. A few dazed Hardits shuffled around in the smoke-blanketed dirt of the trenches to her rear. Lance sheathed his sword and shouldered his SA-71.

“Xena, SITREP, now!” he roared into his helmet.

Lance, the rearmost Marine, Grenadier Dexter Moore, just sealed an underground tunnel that was allowing the Hardits to charge at the regiment’s rear, said Xena. He is the same Marine you tagged earlier for a commendation, the one who charged the trenches first and created a distraction for the rest of the regiment.

Lance tried desperately to remember this Marine; there had been so many he’d tagged for commendation while he moved through the trenches with his regiment. Frustrated at the loss, he increased the speed at which he fired sabots into the injured Hardits crawling out of the smoke-filled trench behind Sashala.

Judging by the size and magnitude of the explosion, it is safe to say he had at least six times the basic combat load for a grenadier. He was consumed in the blast. I can see his loss is bothering you. I will tag his information for you to review later. For now, the trenches are still riddled with the enemy, and your Marines need you.

Lance let go of his carbine and pulled his curved sword from its sheath along his back. Sashala had taught Lance the process of using a lanyard to retain his SA-71 to the rear of his body armor. She called it a ballet. To him, it was a tactical movement that allowed him to let go of his carbine without worrying about it falling into the mud. His transition times to sword and Flenser pistol increased dramatically as a result.

Gripping his sword with his weak hand, he stalked forward at a moderate pace. He didn’t believe in fair fights, and slid his blade into the fronts and backs of his enemies as he found them.
